Jim's French Onion Dip - Old Dutch / Lays (copycat)

Total Time: 40 mins Preparation Time: 20 mins Cook Time: 20 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or you may substitute the same amount of canola oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, etc.)
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped (select ones weighing approx. 12oz. or 340g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (for onion mixture)
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup shredded romano cheese
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (for dip mixture)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • chives (finely chopped over top for garnish) (optional)

Recipe

  • 1 heat butter (or oil) in large skillet on med-low heat. add onions and 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, stir occasionally to caramelize for approximately 20 min until onions are golden brown.
  • 2 scrape all contents of pan into a bowl and let cool to room temperature before proceeding to the next step.
  • 3 in a separate bowl, mix together the remaining ingredients for the dip mixture. once well blended, fold in all the contents of the onion mixture. cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • 4 you may garnish with finely chopped chives over top if you desire. enjoy! :).
