Jim's French Onion Dip - Old Dutch / Lays (copycat)

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or you may substitute the same amount of canola oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, etc.)
- 1 large yellow onion, chopped (select ones weighing approx. 12oz. or 340g)
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (for onion mixture)
- 2 cups sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup shredded romano cheese
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (for dip mixture)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- chives (finely chopped over top for garnish) (optional)
Recipe
- 1 heat butter (or oil) in large skillet on med-low heat. add onions and 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, stir occasionally to caramelize for approximately 20 min until onions are golden brown.
- 2 scrape all contents of pan into a bowl and let cool to room temperature before proceeding to the next step.
- 3 in a separate bowl, mix together the remaining ingredients for the dip mixture. once well blended, fold in all the contents of the onion mixture. cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.
- 4 you may garnish with finely chopped chives over top if you desire. enjoy! :).
